Workplace Prostitution

Workplace prostitution is when an employee is sexual for a promotion or to make a sale.  The sex can actually happen or just be promised. (Farrell, 1993, p. 298)

Scenario:  Mary works at a car dealership and is having a hard time selling vehicles.  One day Tim comes to look at the vehicles on the lot when Mary comes up and asks if he needs help.  Tim says that he would like to buy a particular car but he is unsure if he want to go with that particular brand.  Mary realizes that she might lose the sale so she tells Tim that if he buys the car she will "give him a ride" later on in the evening.  Mary has just sexually propositioned Tim engaging in workplace prostitution.

Ending Thoughts:  Workplace prostitution should not be tolerated as it smears the name of the company.  The person engaging in work place prostitution is not be allowed to continue working at the company because they have to potential to ruin the companies reputation.
